Explanation: Original k<sub>eff</sub> = k + 3k = 4k. After cutting (say k<sub>1</sub> remains): k<sub>eff</sub> = k. T ∝ 1/√k<sub>eff</sub>. T<sub>new</sub>/T<sub>old</sub> = √(4k/k) = 2.
